How (Not) to Palatini

چکیده
We revisit the problem of defining non-minimal gravity in the first order formalism. Specializing to scalar-tensor theories, which may be disguised as ‘higher-derivative’ models with the gravitational Lagrangians that depend only on the Ricci scalar, we show how to recast these theories as Palatini-like gravities. The correct formulation utilizes the Lagrange multiplier method, which preserves the canonical structure of the theory, and yields the conventional metric scalar-tensor gravity. We explain the discrepancies between the näıve Palatini and the Lagrange multiplier approach, showing that the näıve Palatini approach really swaps the theory for another. The differences disappear only in the limit of ordinary General Relativity, where an accidental redundancy ensures that the näıve Palatini works there. We outline the correct decoupling limits and the strong coupling regimes. As a corollary we find that the so-called ‘Modified Source Gravity’ models suffer from strong coupling problems at very low scales, and hence cannot be a realistic approximation of our universe. We also comment on a method to decouple the extra scalar using the chameleon mechanism. [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]

A no-go theorem for polytropic spheres in Palatini f(R) gravity
Non-vacuum static spherically-symmetric solutions in Palatini f(R) gravity are examined. It is shown that for generic choices of f(R), there are commonly-used equations of state for which no satisfactory physical solution of the field equations can be found within this framework, apart from in the special case of General Relativity, casting doubt on whether Palatini f(R) gravity can be consider...
متن کاملN ov 2 00 8 Geodesic Congruences in the Palatini f ( R ) Theory
We shall investigate the properties of a congruence of geodesics in the framework of Palatini f(R) theories. We shall evaluate the modified geodesic deviation equation and the Raychaudhuri’s equation and show that f(R) Palatini theories do not necessarily lead to attractive forces. Also we shall study energy condition for f(R) Palatini gravity via a perturbative analysis of the Raychaudhuri’s e...
متن کاملHamiltonian analysis of n-dimensional Palatini gravity with matter
We consider the Palatini formalism of gravity with cosmological constant Λ coupled to a scalar field φ in n-dimensions. The n-dimensional Einstein equations with Λ can be derived by the variation of the coupled Palatini action provided n > 2. The Hamiltonian analysis of the coupled action is carried out by a 1 + (n− 1) decomposition of the spacetime. It turns out that both Palatini action and H...
متن کاملPalatini versus metric formulation in higher-curvature gravity
We compare the metric and the Palatini formalism to obtain the Einstein equations in the presence of higher-order curvature corrections that consist of contractions of the Riemann tensor, but not of its derivatives. We find that, with the exception of standard Einsteingravity, the two formalisms are not equivalent, but that the Palatini formalism is contained within the metric formalism, in the...
متن کاملPalatini f(R) gravity as a fixed point
In the context of modified gravity, we point out how the Palatini version of these theories is singled out as a very special case corresponding to the unique fixed point of a transformation involving a special conformal rescaling of the metric. This mathematical peculiarity signals deeply rooted problems which make the theory unphysical. PACS: 04.50+h, 04.20.Cv, 04.20.Fy, 04.90.+e.
